The live-action film Gran Turismo, adapted from the iconic PlayStation video game series, is gearing up for an impressive opening week in North America. Box Office Mojo is expected to open with $17.3 million Friday through Sunday, taking the film to the top spot and overtaking its previous leader, the Barbie movie. Internationally, the film is also making great strides, grossing an estimated $36.5 million.

Sony Pictures provides a gripping synopsis of the film: Gran Turismo chronicles the remarkable true story of an unexpected trio – a determined working-class gamer (Archie Madekwe), a racing car racer failure (David Harbour) and an idealistic motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom).
Their combined determination has led them to challenge the pinnacle of motorsport. Gran Turismo delivers an exciting, action-packed story that emphasizes the potential of inner motivation.
Development of the film was led by Columbia Pictures, with Jason Hall (best known for American Sniper) as the screenwriter. Producers include Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, along with Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti. The all-star cast includes David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnet, Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon Hounsou.
Sony initiated the project to bring the racing simulation series to the big screen in 2013. Notably, the project involved producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, best known for Fifty Shades. of Grey. Sony executives Elizabeth Cantillon, DeVon Franklin and Hannah Minghella are also involved in the venture.
The Gran Turismo series made its debut on the first PlayStation in 1997 and has since amassed a staggering 85 million copies in sales. The latest installment, Gran Turismo 7, was released for both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in March 2022.
