In the new episode, Haruhi finds herself in a royal palace where the king asks her to defeat the evil demons. But wait, what world is this? Not knowing anything about this world, Asahina's magic explodes and we think our mission is complete. But then Nagato mutters “Mission not completed” and we are whisked away to outer space, then to a Western movie, then to a mythical world. Who in the world is behind this? And Haruhi, what do you think this time?
The Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series, written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito, began publication in 2003. To date, Kadokawa has published 12 volumes; the latest was published in late 2020 after a 12-year break. Two manga adaptations have also been serialized by Kadokawa. The first, by Makoto Mizuno, ran from May to December 2004 and its chapters were compiled into one volume. The second manga, titled The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya with illustrations by Gaku Tsugano, was serialized from 2005 to 2013 in Kadokawa's Comic Ace magazine. It ended after 20 volumes. Yen Press has licensed both the light novels and Tsugano's manga.
Kyoto Animation's The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime premiered in 2006. The anime aired out of chronological order, adapting random stories from the light novels. Previews for the upcoming week's episodes have both the airing order and the actual episode numbers, in chronological order, while the home video version is in order. A second season was announced in 2007 and would not air until 2009. The first season was re-aired in April of that year with the proper episode order (and DVD release edits). However, the new episodes were mixed together in chronological order. After the second season's finale, a film was announced for The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya. The film shares the same title as the fourth novel in the light novel series, which premiered in 2010.
The first four novels have been fully adapted, along with parts of The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya (6). The franchise has spawned audio dramas, games, spin-offs, and more. It has won multiple Sneaker Awards.
