The English release of Kodansha USA Publishing’s “Land of the Lustrous” manga delves into a world inhabited by crystalline lifeforms known as The Lustrous. These unique gems find themselves engaged in a constant struggle to preserve their way of life against the lurking threat of lunarians who seek to turn them into decorative objects. Simple.
At the heart of the story is Phosphophyllite, the most fragile and fragile of gems, longing to take an active part in the ongoing battle.
However, an unexpected twist of fate entrusts Phos with the seemingly trivial task of creating a natural history for their world. Although it initially seemed like a dull endeavor, this new responsibility brought Phos into contact with Cinnabar, another gem forced to live in isolation. The question remains: Can Phos’s seemingly mundane quest lead both Phos and Cinnabar to the fulfillment they so desire?
The manga by author Haruko Ichikawa, first launched in Kodansha’s Afternoon magazine in 2012, reveals a fascinating story set in a unique and fantasy world. Kodansha continued the series with the release of the 12th compilation volume in November 2022, adding to the ongoing legacy of “Land of the Lustrous.”
Anime adapted from storyconsists of 12 episodes, premiering in October 2017. HIDIVE initially streamed the series to audiences outside the United States and Canada during its initial broadcast, later expanding its availability to these areas in June 2018. At the same time,
Amazon’s now-discontinued Anime Strike service also offered streaming access to the series in the United States and Canada. Sentai Filmworks later released the anime as a complete steelbook collection in January 2019, giving fans a comprehensive viewing experience of the acclaimed series.
