When we think of voice acting, the last thing that comes to mind is how the actors dress during the recording session. While they can choose clothes that are comfortable and not picked up by the microphone, the one thing they don't have to wear is the character's costume. But that's not the case with the Japanese voice actors for Tim Burton's new film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as they put in their best efforts during the recording sessions, wearing costumes and makeup for their respective characters.

The Japanese voice cast had some interesting comments about costumes and makeup for the dubbing process.
Kōichi Yamadera (Beetlejuice)
When I heard that it was full body dubbing, I thought, “What does that mean? It must be difficult,” and it really was! It took dozens of times more time, manpower, and effort than normal dubbing. This was the first time I had a schedule with a four-hour preparation time, and the plaster casting before that took even longer. I originally became a voice actor because I wanted to be someone other than myself, so this is a good memory, and I'm glad they paid attention to even the smallest details. Michael Keaton, who plays Beetlejuice, put a lot of effort into his voice, so I worked hard and pushed my voice to the limit. Dubbing foreign films has a different thrill than dubbing anime, so please pay attention to this, so let's make it go viral. !
Maya Sakamoto (Lydia Deetz)
Halloween has become more of a regular event than ever, so I thought, “Maybe I’ll like dressing up like this now,” and I did a full-body voiceover. It was a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. I hope I was able to portray Lydia, who may seem scary at first glance but also has a gentle side. I first saw Beetlejuice when I was in elementary school, and it was a movie I loved so much that I rented it on video many times. Winona Ryder is one of my favorite actresses, so I never thought I’d be with her after all these years, and I was really surprised and happy.
Miyuki Sawashiro (Delores)
At first, I thought full body dubbing would be like cosplay, but when I heard that they wanted to recreate the character with Hollywood quality, I was happy to participate. During the four hours of makeup, my senses were busy with soft and sticky touches, as well as the feeling of something sticky being stretched and the smell of the art room. I couldn't wait to see the finished product. It was the first time I wanted people to look at me so closely. As the scars increased in makeup, I felt like I was getting closer to Dolores.
Mariya Ise (Astrid Deetz)
At first, I didn't even know what full body dubbing meant. The bottom line was that I was Astrid with the same outfit, hair, and makeup, even adding freckles. It was my first time as a voice actor tackling a character from their appearance, so it was a lot of fun. It's a horror comedy that's perfect for Halloween and has a Tim Burton worldview, so I was excited to do it.
Chiaki Kobayashi (Jeremy)
The voice actors for the whole film are amazing, so it was a dream come true and I felt very honored to be involved. You rarely get to be this close to a character, so it was a great experience for me to be able to immerse myself in the character as if I were possessed. It's something I've never done before. I think Jeremy is a key character in this film and I was excited to play him, wondering, “What's going to happen!?” The film is full of life, fun and a dark atmosphere that only Tim Burton can create.
Toshiyuki Morikawa (Rory)
I think this is a full body dubbing project with a crazy idea on par with Tim Burton. I had a lot of fun filming it and it was fun to get away from my signature hair and glasses. I think this is a project that only a Tim Burton film could do and I am honored to be a part of this unique world that only he can show. It is a very lively and fun film, the voice cast for the full body dubbing version is also excellent so I hope you enjoy both the subbed and dubbed versions.
Kazuhiro Yamaji (Wolf Jackson)
It was an amazing set. For the special makeup for the full-body voice acting, we made the mold in advance and spent four hours preparing on the day, so for me, it was like the shortest dubbing session. Of course, it was my first time, but I was so surprised and excited that I thought, “This far!?” This is a story filled with the world of Tim Burton from beginning to end. I had a lot of fun voicing the Wolf played by Willem Dafoe. Please look forward to the final scene of Wolf.
Keiko Toda (Delia)
When I heard that I was doing full body voice acting, I understood that it meant they wanted to put in a lot of effort, so I took on the voice acting and filming. People usually wear wigs on stage, so I was able to act without feeling uncomfortable. I think in anime, they sometimes use costumes, hair, and makeup specifically for the character, but this was the first time I went that far in a Western film. Tim Burton's worldview was fully realized, which made it a really fun film. The character I played, Delia, was always changing her emotions; just when you think she's going to scream, she suddenly changes her mind, so it was very difficult and interesting to get into character.
While we won't be seeing the voice actors on screen, hopefully the costumes and makeup will give them more inspiration. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens on September 6 in the United States and September 27 in Japan.
