The game in question is Foamstars, a highly anticipated blockbuster from Square Enix. Released in February, Foamstars has not made much of a splash in the gaming community since then, and very quickly, the game has seen a steep decline in player numbers.
The game has received middling reviews and struggled to retain players. More importantly, the biggest hurdle may be its price tag. Unlike many other free-to-play shooters like Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Fortnite that are available on multiple platforms, Foamstars costs $29.99 and requires a PlayStation Plus membership. That's too expensive, and Square Enix now seems to have figured it out.
Accordingly, starting October 4, 2024, the game will be moving to a free-to-play format. In addition to this major change, Foamstars' exclusivity on PlayStation Plus will also be removed. Foamstars plans to give previous players a “Legacy Gift” in the form of 12 exclusive colored Bubble Beastie Skins, an exclusive Slide Board design, and a “Legacy” game title to let other players know they were there first. This change seems to be aimed at thanking those who spent $30 to buy the game.
It's possible that Foamstars will find more players now that it's available to more people, but it's unclear how long that will last, especially given the plethora of potential competitors. Not to mention, many players are angry at Square Enix's “compensation” for what they paid for.
