The latest Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 episode recalls one of anime fans’ favorite pastimes: comparing when Bleach fans come to the defense of their favorites.
The clip of Toda performing the Black Flash technique against Mahito has gone viral since Season 2, Episode 20 was released online. Jujutsu Kaisen fans applauded the fight scene for its over-the-top nature, describing it as “the funniest and craziest raw scene ever.” However, anime fans are being careful in how they praise this scene, making sure to give credit to the animators and not to the anime studio itself. MAPPA, the company behind the anime Jujutsu Kaisen and other popular series such as Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Chainsaw Man, has been heavily criticized for its poor treatment of animators, especially occurred during the production of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2.
A recent production crisis regarding Episode 12 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 prompted episode director Ookubo Shunsuke to post a particularly dark image of a fictional animator from the series Hirobako about to hang himself death. Following this controversial story, fans discovered previous comments from a Jujutsu Kaisen animator expressing their pain and frustration at working under MAPPA, including a since-deleted post read “I want to die quickly.” The revelation that the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 anime film was completed in an unprecedented four months also made fans worried about the physical and mental health of MAPPA animators.
