Episode 17
「霹靂-弐-」 (Hekireki-Ni-)
“Love at first sight, Part 2”
So first of all, I apologize for not being able to talk about each episode properly and combining them into two parts. Episode 17 made me dizzy. But unfortunately, I’m busy with work so I can’t blog much about it. However, I have seen it in a weekly format. So what follows is my actual reaction or something unclear.
Like this week’s episode, last week’s episode was the final episode of each two episodes. And this week another week begins. I’m pretty advanced in manga so most things don’t shock me. But it’s interesting to see them adapted into animation.
Sukuna fighting the Ten Shadows is a vivid display of power and is simply fun to watch. During this fight I found myself thinking Sukuna was pretty hot but then I remembered he’s a cold blooded killer, there’s just something about the way they make him laugh and that crazy look is just amazing thing. But you know me, always fascinated with RC. The last place I should talk about this. However, I couldn’t help myself. Pitting Sukuna against the Ten Shadows just adds another layer of complexity for him. His slashing power is too OP. I guess it’s something that adds more layers and complexity to his character that I quite like.
It’s hard to talk about this episode because what prevails throughout is the fight. Personally, I think there are some photos in there that are a bit difficult to read. It reminds me of something like the FF Kingslave movie. When the action is over the top, the camera has trouble keeping up. It feels like the action is blurred and at times it’s hard to really tell who’s who and what’s what on screen. But it quickly recovered.
My favorite moment that stands out – is seeing Sukuna energized after the fight, and then immediately understanding that he can also be a bit bored. The Ten Shadows are powering up and Sukuna oh yeah – whatever. Sit on top of the traffic light – just let him move his arms and stop the attack like it was nothing. I couldn’t help but scream. Damn-he’s bored! That’s what makes him more interesting. Like Sukuna has ADHD and is looking for the next dopamine hit.
In the end, Sukuna opened his domain but lit a fire and caused a huge explosion. In these few moments, BGM went from high octane to creepy and it was done very well. Leading to a huge god-like explosion. There was a moment where they actually compared him to one. Like a painter using colors in the air. So cool!
Oh yeah—the episode ends with Sukuna having to hand control back to Itadori, but only doing so after leading him to the final impact site, where basically all the people underground have destroyed because of Sukuna’s territory. etc. Our poor boy had suicidal thoughts but pulled through. After all, it doesn’t bring much benefit.
Episode 18
「理非」 (Rihi)
“Right and wrong”
Please be quiet for a moment…
I already knew what was going to happen with Nanami so there’s really no surprise there. Still, I like how they adapted this moment, giving him a moment of fun on the beach, before finally killing him off. Furthermore, they add more depth to his character by showing how compassionate he is towards others and does not allow himself to become a curse. And then he was fired by Mahito. Plus, how much we actually hate him. Nanamin has become a cultured father in the hearts of fans since the scene with the blonde boy. So getting rid of him was difficult for everyone, including me.
It’s hard to tell but it seems like this death was justified in a way that fueled Yuji’s rage, and more than that, his own ego. As he progresses further, he wants to prove himself as a true Jujutsu Mage. It turns out Yuji has no CE and his fists are just a product of lagging energy. However-that doesn’t mean he isn’t something to be feared.
The second half of the episode is very exciting, Yuji is fearless and walks straight towards his target and is ready to attack. Mahito points out a nice detail that Yuji seems to have a lot of empathy for lost souls. Mahito mentions that it is simply impossible to name each person and pray for them, to name them and realize they were once human, including himself. That’s a good point because in reality it’s all just Jujutsu and there’s really nothing you can do about it. You can either accept it for what it is and start using this power to your advantage or get left behind and become one of them. That could be the moment that shapes Yuji into the character he has yet to become.
Let’s not forget this week is a two-part week, next week we will have the conclusion to this episode and hopefully everyone at MAPPA is okay. Remember to drink water and get some sleep. The love for the craft is really starting to show. Seriously, JJK hasn’t stopped since it started airing and oh my god it’s beautiful.
Another great fight and another great episode. Can’t wait to see more!
