The following spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 221, “Gross and Loss,” by Gege Akutami, John Werry and Snir Aharon, are now available in English through Viz Media.
This week’s Jujutsu Kaisen sees the long-awaited return of the world’s most powerful sorcerer Gojo Satoru and, oddly enough, Yuji Itadori’s ears.
Gege Akutami, the mangaka of Jujutsu Kaisen, apologized for the constant error in the author’s comments on Weekly Shōnen Jump for Chapter 221. According to Twitter user Jさん( ֊’ ‘֊) (@/soukatsu_), the mangaka was wrote, “Itadori’s right ear coming back was my mistake, but it’s not my mistake to go back to Gojo.” The mangaka’s apology may have backfired, as many people didn’t notice anything was wrong.
Jujutsu Kaisen fans reacted with confession
One fan wrote, “didn’t even realize my man lost an ear.” Another joked: “Oh my god, I thought he was using the reverse curse technique without knowing it.” The injured ear, mentioned, occurs in Chapter 214 when Yuji fights against Sukuna, who has taken over Megumi. Sukuna’s attack severed the top of Yuji’s ear, leaving a pile of blood. While some fans laughed at the humor in Akutami’s comment, other fans focused on the second half of the statement, believing that Akutami didn’t want to “leave that white-haired guy out of the box.” damn it” and has more ominous plans ahead for the sorcerer, despite eventually freeing Gojo from his box.
Akutami spoke out about their dislike of Gojo a few years ago. In the various comments made by the author, Akutami has expressed some rather candid opinions about the character they created. In November 2019, they commented that Satoru Gojo has no personality and even wrote in early 2020, “Now that Gojo is gone, it looks like 2020 will be a good year.” Mangaka even begged fans to vote for another character in the Jump Festa popularity poll after Gojo had won overwhelmingly on the previous character.
How did Gege Akutami begin
Akutami’s beginnings in the manga industry began as Yatsuhiro Kanō’s assistant in his work Kiss x Death. They released a one-shot titled Kamishiro Sōsa in May 2014 and several other one-shots thereafter. In 2017, the mangaka wrote a four-chapter work titled Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Engineering School, which later served as the basis for Jujutsu Kaisen 0, the opening of the main Jujutsu Kaisen series. Jujutsu Kaisen began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018 and has more than 70 million copies in circulation as of August 2022. An anime film adaptation, with MAPPA support, is premiered in October 2020, with the second season premiering on July 6, 2023.
Jujutsu Kaisen will be taking a break for a few weeks and will return on May 14, 2023.
