Chapter 242 of Jujutsu Kaisen includes a clever Easter egg referencing the final chapter of Yoshihiro Togashi’s Yu Yu Hakusho manga.
As detailed on ComicBook.com, Jujutsu Kaisen is currently in the midst of a high-stakes battle royale called “The Culling Game,” whose architects intend to remake humanity. by weaponizing cursed energy. In this tournament, Kenjaku faces off against a warrior named Fumihiko Takaba, who is known for his ability to turn reality into random nonsense to defeat his opponents. Instead of resisting, Kenjaku decides to use his own comedic power to defeat Fumihiko. One panel depicts the couple frolicking in the water, directly mirroring the moment in the finale of Yu Yu Hakusho, where Yusuke and Keiko fight under the sea.
Chapter 242 also reimagines Togashi’s classic in other ways. In front of said dashboard, Kenjaku jumps in front of a speeding car to rescue a cat. Fans of Yu Yu Hakusho will likely recognize this as a reference to the scene where Yusuke sacrifices himself to save a child in Chapter 1. These fun Easter eggs show the love and respect of Yusuke. Akutami towards Togashi’s manga, which he admits to being a huge fan of in the past.
Jujutsu Kaisen launched in March 2018, introducing readers to an imaginative world where negative emotions take the form of malevolent entities known as Curses. After being afflicted with a special-level curse called Ryomen Sukuna, protagonist Yuji Itadori dedicates his life and newfound powers to protecting humanity from mysterious creatures. Season 2 of Studio MAPPA’s popular anime adaptation debuted this July and included the “Hidden Inventory” and “Shibuya Incident” arcs right before the Killing Game. As of June 2023, the Jujutsu Kaisen manga had more than 80 million copies in circulation worldwide.
Yu Yu Hakusho was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. The story begins with a single selfless act by teenage criminal Yusuke Urameshi, which resulted in his premature death. After reclaiming her life from the Overseer of Hell, Koenma, Urameshi begins a new life as a Spirit Detective, using a powerful arsenal of supernatural abilities to slay demons who find their way to the Human World. Pierrot’s 1992 film adaptation recently celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special Blu-ray box set that included newly dubbed OVA episodes. Netflix also recently revealed the first teaser for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho, which is scheduled to release on December 14.
