IN Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a prequel film to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime, Yuta Okkotsu plays the main character in the absence of Yuji Itadori, but Yuta has not yet been properly introduced in the anime series. Although it is a prequel to the anime series, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is based on the manga by Gege Akutami that was released first. After the initial success of Yuta’s story in the manga Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Akutami expanded the world into a weekly Shōnen Jump series, Jujutsu Kaisen, in which Yuji Itadori became the main character. Following the release of the movie Jujutsu Kaisen 0, anime fans may still be wondering where Yuta Okkotsu was during the events of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a supernatural anime series about young witches learning their craft under Gojo Satoru at Tokyo Jujutsu High School. The first season follows Yuji Itadori after he eats a cursed finger and becomes a vessel for the powerful cursed spirit, Ryomen Sukuna. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 follows a similar story with Yuta Okkotsu. Yuta believes he is cursed by the spirit of his childhood friend Rika. Seeing Yuta’s potential, Gojo took Yuta under his wing at the Jujutsu school. Yuta’s growth in the film makes him a valuable asset for Jujutsu Kaisen’s Gojo Satoru, but Yuta Okkotsu has yet to appear in the Jujutsu Kaisen anime.
Yuta hasn’t appeared in Jujutsu Kaisen yet but he has been mentioned
Although Yuta Okkotsu has not fully appeared in Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, there have been some rumors about this character’s existence. Although it’s not always clear, Yuta is name-dropped by the characters and even appears in the second opening of season 1. The reason Yuta isn’t properly introduced is because in the event of the season, he is studying in Africa with another wizard, Miguel. If the anime is faithfully adapting the manga, Yuta will be introduced after the events of the Shibuya Incident arc. Since this will take up most of part 2, Yuta Okkotsu will likely appear later in Jujutsu Kaisen part 2 or early in part 3.
Yuta was first mentioned in Jujutsu Kaisen season 1, episode 5. When Megumi introduced second-year Nobara, he explained how cursed speech user Inumaki could only speak using the ingredients of rice balls. Panda says that Inumaki is “a little softer when Yuta is around.” Megumi later admits that Yuta is the only second year student he truly respects, which is understandable considering Yuta’s achievements in the film. In episode 6, Gojo also mentioned Yuta, asserting that he and third-year Hakiri have the potential to become witches on par with him. He also believes that Yuji is one of the chosen students with that potential. For fans who haven’t read the manga, these references to Yuta established his reputation. Fans who only watch the anime will not realize that Yuta Okkotsu appears in the second opening scene of Jujutsu Kaisen season 1. Although Yuta is not introduced in season 1, his hidden presence decides his importance as the anime progresses.
When will Yuta return to the Jujutsu Kaisen anime?
As mentioned above, Yuta does not appear again in the main story of Jujutsu Kaisen until after the events of the Shibuya Incident arc. Since the second season will cover the remainder of the Shibuya Incident, Yuta could appear at the end of Part 2 as a hint to the upcoming events in Part 3. However, given how long the Shibuya Incident lasted so there may not be time for this kind of tease for next season, so Yuta’s reappearance could also be saved for early Season 3, which could frame things through the perspective of Yuta aims to better orient viewers back to what happened after Season 2.
However, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Yuta in action. During the events of season 1, he is studying abroad with Miguel. Miguel is a character who fights and impresses Gojo in the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. In the film’s post-credits scene, Yuta and Miguel eat together when Gojo interrupts them. Gojo greeted Yuta and said “long time no see.” This is a nod to Yuta’s absence in part 1, however, the purpose of his trip remains ambiguous. It could simply be to increase training and learn more cursed techniques. What’s certain is that Yuta will eventually appear on the show, especially after the success of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 left fans wanting to see more of him. After his trip and training, Yuta will be even stronger than before. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and he should prove his ability to surpass Gojo.
