The world of John Wick is expanding more and more.
Appearing on The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast, longtime John Wick director Chad Stahelski revealed his and Lionsgate’s upcoming plans for the action franchise, which includes a new TV show and an anime. The prequel, he revealed, could “explore The High Table” that governs Wick’s shadowy assassin culture, but is also “completely separate” from The Continental: From the World of John Wick miniseries Peacock, explores how Winston Scott became the series’ manager. New York Hotel.
Instead of Wick or Winston, Stahelski teased the possibility of exploring other characters introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4. “Yeah, I love Donnie [Yen]I love Rina [Sawayama]Tracker (Shamier Anderson), the TV show and the spin-off shows will give us a chance to expand on the kind of fun world we’ve created,” he said, adding, “I think TV is a better format for that, I think because people can jump in the background you don’t have to spend so much time setting up the first act and all that.”
As for the anime series, Stahelski touted the benefits of exploring Wick’s world through this medium, noting that “to create all the interesting stories that anime can achieve better than we can and TV shows to expand our world, we’ll still get our fix, you know what I mean? And we will still have fun.” He also spoke about his limited involvement in The Continental, revealing, “It was very early in ‘John Wick 4,’ so we showed them some of our ideas. And then, honestly, what? [My team and I] there was very, very, very little to do with it other than give that creative team a look into our little world, and we gave them a little tour of how we do things, and then they took it and made it their own so it was a separate creative team.”
While the main Wick films are limited to John Wick’s story, his universe has been spread across a variety of media. This includes video games like John Wick’s upcoming 2019 film Ballerina Hex and Anna de Armas, which will feature Keanu Reeves’ titular character in a supporting role. Meanwhile, The Continental received mixed reviews, with critics praising the action scenes but criticizing the storytelling and the decision to cast Mel Gibson as villain Cormac O’Connor.
Although Lionsgate announced a fifth John Wick movie earlier this year, Stahelski confirmed in a recent interview that Wick’s story is now over. The filmmaker is currently working on an adaptation of the video game Ghost of Tsushima, while former John Wick co-director David Leitch’s next film, The Fall Guy, will be released next March.
The films John Wick and The Continental: From the World of John Wick are now available to stream on Peacock.
