The Japanese live-action film adaptation of the popular City Hunter series has released its first trailer ahead of its release on Netflix scheduled for April 25.

Live Action Movie City Hunter – First Trailer
Yuichi Sato will direct the film, with actor Ryohei Suzuki playing Ryo Saeba and Misato Morita playing Kaori Makimura. The live-action adaptation was first announced in December 2022, while the first season was released in February 2024 via a series of teaser images. Netflix describes the plot:
After receiving the message “XYZ, please find my sister”, Ryo and his partner Hideyuki continue to search for Kurumi, a famous cosplayer. Meanwhile, mysterious violent incidents are taking place in Shinjuku and Saeko, a skilled police detective, is having difficulty solving these cases. Ryo and Hideyuki work together to pursue Kurumi, but tragedy strikes when Hideyuki is killed during the investigation. Witnessing her brother’s death, Kaori begs Ryo to discover the truth behind the incident.
The City Hunter franchise is based on the manga by Tsukasa Hojo and has several media adaptations. The anime adaptation began in 1987 and ran for 51 episodes. The second season aired from April 2, 1988 to July 14, 1989, followed by the third season from October 15, 1989 to January 21, 1990. Films in this series include .357 Magnum (1989), Bay City Wars (1990), Million Dollar Plot (1990), Secret Service (1996), Goodbye My Lover (1997) and Death of the Evil Criminal Ryo Saeba ( 1999).
The film’s most recent animated film, titled City Hunter the Movie: Angel Dust, was released on September 8, 2023. The film was animated by Sunrise and The Answer Studio, under the direction of Kenji Kodama . Japanese rock band TM Network also returned to perform the film’s ending theme song “Get Wild”.
The franchise also has multiple live-action adaptations, including two Hong Kong films (1991 and 1993) and a French film. comedy Nicky Larson et le Parfum de Cupidon (2016). A South Korean live-action series (2011) brought the title back to popularity featuring actor Lee Min-ho.
