Empowering female characters in anime: In anime, we sometimes come across characters that inspire us to be better and not be pushed around by society. They tell us that just because we are women doesn’t mean we need to be stuck in predestined roles and that we can venture out to experience other aspects of life.
So, to celebrate this International Women’s Day, I decided to showcase some of my favorite female characters, icons of female empowerment. I’ve tried my best not to reveal much about the series.
Empowering female anime characters you must know
Casca (Berserk)
When we talk about empowering women, no one is a better example than Casca. She truly created her own path to success in a time and environment that was extremely hostile and dangerous for women.
She endured a traumatic childhood but still became a formidable warrior, famous for her swordsmanship and leadership in the Band of the Hawk. And although she loves Griffith, she never lets that get in the way of her mission and refuses to define her feelings towards him.
But Casca’s journey is one of immense struggle and personal growth, and it’s sad that a strong woman like her has to go through it later in the series.
Violet Evergarden (Violet Evergarden)
When Violet Evergarden aired, we all applauded the anime and KyoAni for its incredibly beautiful animation. But this film is more than just visual entertainment. Violet is a strong role model for women, offering a unique combination of strength, empathy, and maturity.
Her journey is not that of a traditional female protagonist, but rather she goes on a journey of self-discovery. The emotion of love also plays an important role in her life as she tries her best to understand its true meaning.
Violet challenges the typical “female warrior” image. Although she possesses immense physical strength, she is also able to create letters that convey an individual’s deepest emotions.
Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon (Sailor Moon)
Sailor Moon is a symbol for many girls who learned from her that they too could be heroes. She is special because she does not shy away from her emotions. We also see her show vulnerability and express her doubts and fears. However, this openness does not mean weakness.
Instead, it highlights the strength it takes to be sincere and genuine, even in difficult times.
Sailor Moon’s powers don’t just lie in being a magical girl, either. But the unwavering support and friendship Usagi receives from her fellow Sailor Guardians is her true strength.
Akane Tsunemori (Psycho-Pass)
Unlike many characters who simply follow orders, Akane is guided by a strong moral compass. She questions the ruthless efficiency of the Sibyl System, the core foundation of her society, and fights for what she believes is right.
Akane also has more than just a pretty face. She possesses a sharp intellect and outstanding analytical skills. This is evident in her ability to dissect the complexities of the Sybil System and develop strategic plans.
But the best part is that, while navigating the harsh realities of her dark world, Akane never loses sight of her humanity.
Clare (Claymore)
Clare exists in a cruel world where Claymores, half-human, half-Yoma warriors, are ostracized and used as disposable tools. Despite this, she shows us some excellent swordsmanship skills, honed through years of endless training and brutal combat.
Sadly, even after Claymores do so much for the safety of others, they still face constant social prejudice and are treated as usable weapons. However, Clare persevered despite the stigma and discrimination.
We also see her form deep bonds with her Claymore friends and even form a special bond with Raki, a boy she saved.
Emma (The Promised Land)
Emma is not a damsel in distress as she leads the fight for freedom from her seemingly idyllic orphanage. Her unwavering optimism and determination inspired her fellow orphans to also deny their tragic fate.
She also has a sharp mind and uses strategic planning to deceive adults. This is because pulling off such a grand escape plan without leaving anyone behind is a feat that no one can achieve by force alone.
So, she truly inspired all of us to rebel against our bad fate and choose our own path.
