Macross remains one of the biggest Mecha anime franchises, rivaling anime
Beginning with Super Dimensional Fortress Macross in 1982, the entire series is the second largest mecha anime property in Japan. Its main rival is the Mobile Suit Guns line, although there are some key differences between the two. Most notably, Macross combines mecha action with stomping soundtracks, as fictional singers and pop culture are prominent themes in the film. Lynn Minmay was the first of these iconic anime idols who, along with her voice actress, Mari Iijima, are having successful singing careers of their own.
Macross also created the Robotech franchise in the West. The first season of the series combines footage from the original Macross anime with two other unrelated shows. However, due to legal issues, Macross was never actually localized in the West. This could now change thanks to an agreement between franchisor Big West and owner Robotech Harmony Gold. Sadly, fans will have to travel to Japan to enjoy the Macross kabuki experience, with 2,500 yen (about $17.63 USD) tickets already sold out.
