This side story acts as a prequel to the main Hunter x Hunter manga written by Yoshihiro Togashi and is often labeled Volume 0 of the series. It delves into Kurapika’s childhood, following the story of how he lost his clan due to the onslaught of the Phantom Troupe. The events of the story became the founding driving force for the character in the main series. The first million viewers to see Hunter x Hunter: Phantom Rouge in theaters received a copy of the one-shot.
Kurapika plays a major role in the HxH series, acting as the main character in the “Hunter Exam” and taking on the main character role for the “York City” and “Succession Contest” seasons. — the following part is currently in progress. He is loved by fans for his tragic story, cool demeanor, intelligence, and impressive strength. Fans of the character will have a chance to experience his previously hard-to-reach backstory after this one-shot is released.
Yoshihiro Togashi is a popular mangaka known for creating the Hunter x Hunter series and the iconic Yu Yu Hakusho he wrote earlier. Both projects became major franchises that had a marked influence on the animation industry. However, the busy work schedule often affects Togashi’s health, leading to HxH having to be interrupted many times. The series went through its longest hiatus from 2018 to 2022 before republishing in October 2022. It has since gone on hiatus again following the release of Chapter 400 in December 2022. However, in March 2023, Togashi reported that chapter 401 was making promising progress.
The Hunter x Hunter manga was adapted into an anime by Nippon Animation in 1999, which ended early as it caught up with the number of manga. The reboot from Madhouse was finally created in 2011, rebooting the series and sticking to the manga more precisely. However, this acclaimed reboot ended in September 2014 after 148 episodes.
The 2011 anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll. Additionally, fans can read Togashi’s manga through the VIZ Media website with a Shonen Jump subscription.
