The Hunter x Hunter manga has been on indefinite hiatus for nearly two years. However, last week, Shonen Jump's Jump Press chapter announced that the manga would be making its long-awaited return on October 7, 2024While fans eagerly count down to read the new chapter, author Yoshihiro Togashi feels pressured.
With health issues making it difficult for him to complete chapters, and the reason behind the long hiatus, Togashi has been keeping fans updated on his progress. The manga author recently took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to express the difficulties he has faced writing and illustrating new Hunter x Hunter chapters in two new posts. In one post, Togashi mentioned how difficult it is to perform daily tasks, saying, “I sat on the toilet and my back hurt. The colors came. I wrote the manuscript while sleeping.” An image of colorful brush strokes accompanied the post.

In a second post, made a day later, the author shared a full-color image of Meruem, one of the main antagonists of Hunter x Hunter, saying, “Going to the bathroom was so depressing that I had to cancel my meal.” Togashi has previously mentioned that to manage his chronic back pain, he draws while lying on his back—the only way to alleviate the discomfort and maintain his creative output. With the pressure mounting for Hunter x Hunter’s return, it’s unclear whether another hiatus could happen at some point.
VIZ licensed the Hunter x Hunter manga in North America, with the series available to read on MANGA Plus and the Shonen Jump app. The first volume is officially described: “Gon may be a country boy, but he has big ambitions. Despite his aunt Mito's objections, Gon decides to follow in his father's footsteps and become a legendary Hunter. The Hunter hopefuls begin their journey aboard a storm-tossed ship, where Gon meets Leorio and Kurapika, the only candidates not ravaged by seasickness. Having survived the horrors of the sea, Gon and his companions must now prove their worth in various tests to find the elusive Examination Chamber. And once they get there, will they ever return alive…?”
