Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto was inspired by the creation of Shiryu from Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga.
One One Piece news translator, who goes by the username Sandman (or @SandmanAP) on Twitter, shared a 2015 interview in which Oda explained how an invisible character in Kishimoto’s manga inspired him to create his own character. “What surprised me the most was when one of Kishimoto-san’s bad guys went invisible and went underwater. All you see is his silhouette, and I think that’s really well done. I used that as inspiration for my invisible character, Shiryu,” he said. Although Oda doesn’t mention the character’s name, the technique resembles a Water Style technique called “Dustless Panic Cover”, which uses steam to manipulate the light around the user, rendering them undetectable to the naked eye.
Shiryu was first introduced in the Impel Down section of One Piece as a former warden turned death row inmate. At this point, he already possesses formidable strength and speed, despite not having eaten the Devil Fruit. While awaiting execution, Shiryu escaped after helping Deputy Warden Magellan end a riot caused by Luffy and Blackbeard. His fateful encounter with the legendary pirate leader forced him to join his crew and become one of the infamous Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates. Shiryu gained his invisibility after eating the Suke Suke No Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit.
One Piece Coming to Netflix
Oda has openly expressed his admiration for Kishimoto’s Naruto manga. A chat has been published between Oda and Kishimoto that has revealed how they have shared a friendly enmity for many years. The artists also discussed at length what they admired about each other’s work. Despite One Piece’s status as the world’s best-selling manga, Oda maintains that Naruto is ultimately the more popular series. He also argued that Netflix’s live-action One Piece series could be the series’ last chance to “go global.”
Steve Maeda and Matt Owens’ upcoming One Piece adaptation will cover the early stages of Luffy’s (Inaki Godoy) journey to becoming the Pirate King. Netflix recently released an action-packed “first look” trailer highlighting Luffy, Nami (Emily Rudd), Zoro (Mackenyu) and the crew’s iconic ship, the Going Merry. It also revealed the live-action design of Buggy the Clown, one of the series’ first villains. The series will premiere on Netflix on August 31.
The One Piece manga is available in English from VIZ Media. The popular anime adaptation is available on Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll.
