Merchandise includes stuffed animals featuring Hello Kitty sitting on Alluri’s lap and Dear Daniel sitting on Komaram’s, acrylic charms and stands of the characters, heart-shaped pins showing the characters performing the special “Naatu Naatu” dance RRR logo, transparent laminated case, tote bag, and “Naatu Naatu” curry. The temporary store will be open on Tokyo Character Street in the Ichibangai Tokyo Station shopping complex from November 24 to December 7, 2023, with additional merchandise available at the temporary store, including T-shirts and cups.
RRR is an Indian blockbuster film directed by SS Rajamouli, which premiered on March 25, 2022 and received immediate acclaim. On its first day, the film made $30 million worldwide and is currently one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. The film is set in the 1920s in British-occupied India and tells the story of two historical figures Alluri Sitarama Raju (Ram Charan) and Komaram Bheem (NT Rama Rao Jr.), who fought against British occupation of their country. The film takes an alternative history approach – as the two main characters never met in real life – and asks what might have happened if the two revolutionaries had combined their efforts. RRR won several awards after its release and was nominated for many more, winning Best Song at the 95th Academy Awards for “Naatu Naatu” – the first Indian film ever made this.
Sanrio has collaborated with various brands over the years, including Yury On Ice, Haikyuu, My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan and Naruto. Its current partnership with RRR may be unprecedented for the franchises Sanrio typically partners with, but while the merchandise may not be to everyone’s taste, there will certainly be lovers of Sanrio’s latest collaboration.
RRR is currently streaming on Netflix.
