The initial 10 million yen (about $65,000) target will fund a new song featuring Haruhi, Mikuru, and Nagato, with the music video featuring a 3D model of Haruhi dancing. The second target of 15 million yen (about $97,000 USD) will also add 3D models of Mikuri and Nagato. Aki Hata and Tomokazu Tashiro, writers of the anime's iconic ending theme song “Hare Hare Yukai”, will compose the new song, with Tashiro composing the music and Hata writing the lyrics.
The project will also include the creation of a new original dub film starring the SOS Brigade cast (Aya Hirano, Tomokazu Sugita, Minori Chihara, Yūko Gotō and Daisuke Ono) as support rewards.
The new music video is expected to premiere in the first half of 2025. Backer rewards are expected to be sent in early February 2025, while digital backer rewards will broadcast in the second half of 2025.
The Theater of Haruhi Suzumiya (Suzumiya Haruhi no Gekijō), the first new volume in the Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series in four years, will be released simultaneously worldwide on November 29. BookWalker Global by Kadokawa and Yen Press will both release the novel in English digitally on November 29.
The volume will include two short stories previously published in Kadokawa's The Sneaker magazine, along with new sequels to those two stories.
The short story “Suzumiya Haruhi Gekijō: Fantasy-Hen” (Haruhi Suzumiya Theater: Fantasy Arc) was published in the August 2004 issue of The Sneaker magazine. It begins when the SOS Brigade is seemingly transported to a fantasy world. The story continues in different worlds through the sequel story”Kaete Kita Suzumiya Haruhi Gekijō”(The Return of Haruhi Suzumiya Theater) in the June 2006 issue of The Sneaker magazine. New upcoming volumes will add a new short story sequel to the previous stories.
Tanigawa and illustrator Noizi Ito published 11 novels for the original series from 2003-2011. This light novel series has over 20 million copies in print as of 2017. The Little publisher, Brown Books for Young Readers, and Yen Press released the entire series (at the time) in 10 volumes in period 2009-2013. The first 10 episodes are also available digitally in English.
Kadokawa published Haruhi Suzumiya's Intuition, another volume containing two previous short stories and one new short story, in November 2020, and Yen Press published the volume digitally in English at the same time as the Next print June 2021.
The first season of the anime series The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya premiered in 2006 in a non-linear order and was rebroadcast in 2009 with new plot twists and a new chronology. Kyoto Animation animated the first and second seasons of the show. Bandai Entertainment previously held the license for both films, but Funimation re-released the anime in 2016.
The anime The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya premiered in 2010. Bandai Entertainment and later Funimation released the film on home video.
The novel has also inspired manga and spinoff manga. Some spin-off manga have also inspired anime works.
