DC Comics super villain Harley Quinn and waggery being treated with Isekai in the new Suicide Squad anime by Warner Bros. Japanese production. DC is no stranger to partnering with anime’s biggest names to bring their iconic heroes and villains to the media. One of their original animated films, Batman Ninja, was even warmly received by fans for blending Gotham City detective with feudal Japan. Now, DC and the anime world are collaborating once again on a new project that will take one of the most popular subgenres on the medium, Isekai, and apply it to one of the fan-favorite characters. Crunchyroll News recently announced on their website that a new anime called Isekai Suicide Squad will be shown everywhere in the very near future. This huge project was announced at Anime Expo 2023 with the participation of many talented individuals who have worked on Isekai anime before. This includes the anime’s director, Eri Osada (World’s Best Assassin reincarnated in another world as an aristocrat), and co-writer Tappei Nagatsuki (Re:ZERO – Beginning of Life) in another world). The story is expected to follow Harley Quinn and the Joker being sent to a strange new world with the Suicide Squad in their tails. It is not yet clear whether their goal is to return home or take over, but knowing these villains, they can try to cause some chaos while they are there.
The Isekai Suicide Squad will send Harley and Joker to a fantasy Anime world
Accompanying the announcement of the new anime was a short one-minute trailer introducing the Isekai Suicide Squad. It’s incredibly action-packed with Harley swinging her iconic stick at a grenade, dragons soaring through the sky, and Joker slamming down the street in his car while playing the piano. It’s utter chaos and beautifully captured with animation produced by Wit Studio. This animation company has recently gained a lot of popularity for producing the hit animated series Spy x Family, but it is also known for its Rating of Kings and the first three seasons of Attack on Titan. Their brand style is on full display in this trailer with animation that promises the same quality as what they’ve brought to their other movies, making it an anime that is definitely in the… the most anticipated list of many fans.
Stunning Harley Quinn Key teaser art hints at possible team members
In the artwork released with the trailer, Harley Quinn is fully rendered with her anarchist personality. She’s wearing a black “Suicide Squad” tiara and detaching what could be Martha Wayne’s pearl necklace in a cliché Batman-derived lantern. Most notable are the pins on her vest as they feature characters that can appear throughout the project. The Joker has been known to be a part of the anime, but the Peacemaker helmet clearly shows that the peacekeeper killer could also be part of the team. Next to his pin is a visual pin from a gun, potentially implying that Deadshot will also be in the party.
While there’s no word yet on when the anime will release, it’s safe to assume that it’ll be available to watch by 2024 at the latest. It’s also unlikely this will be a movie or a series, but knowing the details. DC’s other anime project, it will probably be a prequel. This is sure to be a must-see for any fan of DC, anime, and Harley Quinn as its release date approaches. The very idea of Harley Quinn and waggery being sent to a classic Isekai world opens up so many possibilities for the story, making this Suicide Squad anime a must-add to every watchlist.
