Viewers can now take a look at the new Mobile Suit from the upcoming next anime film in the Mobile Suit Gun franchise.
Mobile SuitGundam Seed FREEDOM continues the story of the Space Age timeline that debuted in 2002’s Mobile SuitGundam SEED. The latest promotional video of the new movie introduces the new Mobile Suits that will appear in the story — specifically possibly Rising Freedom Gundunda by Kira Yamato. The robot appears at the beginning of the video, powering up in colorful battle mode and then switching to jet-like MA mode. Other Mobile Suits seen are Immortal Justice Group, Gyan Strom, Gelgoog Menace and Force Impulse Gundunda Spec II, with Immortal Justice Gundam being the second most prominent.
The Immortal JusticeGundam is a new form of the JusticeGundam once piloted by Athrun Zala, similar to how Yamato’s old Mobile Suit was replaced by the Rising FreedomGundam. These are just some of the armored mechs featured in the film, but others include the Black Knight Squad. This squad boasts an aesthetic that is both unique and uniform, making them stand out from infantry Mobile Suits like the Zakus. The action-packed preview shows them all exploding, slashing and attacking each other. There’s also a glimpse of Orphee Lam Tao, a new character introduced in the film voiced by actor/singer Hiro Shimono.
Mobile Suit Gun Seed FREEDOM is part of the Mobile Suit Gunma Seed Project Launch initiative, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the spin-off series. This new wave of projects also includes a new video game and a comic book series, coming on the heels of an HD re-release of the original series. The film is set after the events of Mobile Suit GTA SEED Destiny, which was released in 2004, 20 years before FREEDOM debuted. These spin-off series also feature manga spin-offs in the form of Mobile Suit GTA SEED Astray, which focuses on different characters and Mobile Suits in addition to the main plot.
The Space Age timeline of Gundam is one of the franchise’s most successful and popular “alternate universes,” with most of the previous works being set in the Common Century timeline. However, since the 1990s there have been multiple entries in their own universes, with the Turn A gundam series really cementing these continuities. Since then, the biggest name in the franchise has been Mobile Suit Gun: The Witch from Mercury, which revived the franchise’s popularity and attracted a new audience with its younger adult-oriented premise. . This reflects the success of the original SEED, which was famous for attracting more female fans.
Mobile SuitGundam Seed FREEDOM hits theaters on January 26, 2024.
