Grisaia Phantom Trigger is based on the multi-part visual novel by Frontwingone of the entries in The Fruit of Grisaia series. There have previously been three theatrical OVAs, the first two forming 2019's Grisaia Phantom Trigger The Animation and the third titled Grisaia Phantom Trigger The Animation Stargazer. The OVA cast will return for the anime television series, which is described as a sequel to the OVA.
As of 2022, the visual novel has eight volumes. The first is described as:
After the Heath Oslo incident, the existence of the US-Japanese anti-terrorism organization CIRS became a matter of public knowledge. CIRS was rebuilt from the ground up and most of its secret functions were transferred to a new agency: SORD (Social Operations, Research & Development).
SORD's goal is to train a new generation of agents to protect the country against future threats. To achieve that goal, the organization has established a series of schools across the country. Mihama Academy, more or less abandoned after its sudden closure, was given a new purpose as such a'professional training school'.
This new incarnation of Mihama Academy is home to a diverse group of students who work every day to hone their unusual skills—sometimes on the job. Mihama now assigns unfit girls to attend the range with guns and live ammunition.
Without regard for their own safety, these students time and again embark on dangerous missions outside the law—all for the good of the kingdom.
