X's official account Grand Blue announced on September 29, 2024 that the anime will return for a second season six years after the first season aired in 2018.
Part 2 will continue the story after Iori completes a diving course in Okinawa. The plot begins when Iori returns home and receives a letter from his sister, Shiori.
Teaser images of the characters celebrating under the summer sky were released along with the announcement.
Zero-G, the studio behind Part 1, is back for Part 2, this time collaborating with Liber.
Shinji Takamatsu will reprise his roles as director, screenwriter and sound director, with Hideoki Kusama serving as character designer and animation director.
Main cast, including Yuma Uchida as Iori, Ryohei Kimura as Kohei Imamura, Hiroki Yasumoto as Shinji Tokita, Katsuyuki Konishi as Ryujiro Kotobuki, Chika Anzai as Chisa Kotegawa, Maaya Uchida as Nanaka Kotegawa, Takuya Eguchi as Hajime Nojima and Kana Asumi as Aina Yoshiwara will also return.
Author Kenji Inoue expressed excitement about the sequel, commenting: “I'm happy that even after such a long time, people are still excited for the sequel. I wonder if diving will attract so much attention from fans! After all, this manga was originally created with the purpose of promoting the marine sport of diving!”
Manga illustrator Kimitake Yoshioka shared an illustration to commemorate the announcement.
The first season of Grand Blue aired from July 14 to September 29, 2018. The series is 12 episodes long.
A live action film was released on August 7, 2020. The film was directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa.
