Yuto Sano's Gokurakugai manga has officially surpassed 800,000 copies in circulation for volumes 1-4. Volume 4 is scheduled to release on September 4, 2024. Fans who purchase Gokurakugai Volume 4 at select stores in Japan will receive one of four random stickers featuring character illustrations of Tao, Alma, Yoru, or Yomi.
The Gokurakugai manga series recently received a reprint of all volumes, marking the fifth time since it began serialization. Gokurakugai began as a short story titled Gokurakugai Sanban-doori no Ken published in Jump SQ in 2020, eventually leading to the current serialization of Gokurakugai in 2022 under Shueisha's Jump Square magazine. Since then, the manga has released a total of 20 chapters (1-5, 5.1-19) and three volumes.
The series has received four color editions since it began serialization and was featured on the cover of the most recent issue of Jump SQ's July 2024 issue (see below). The series went on hiatus in the August issue but is scheduled to return with Chapter 20 on September 3, 2024. Fans can read Gokurakugai on the official Shonen Jump and Manga Plus apps.
Gokurakugai has been largely successful. The manga has over 500,000 copies in circulation as of August 1, 2024, and ranked 20th out of 50 candidates in the “Poll of Manga We Want to See Animated” at Anime Japan 2024, beating out series such as Tokyo Aliens and Nue's Exorcist. VIZ Media has acquired the English license for the series and has since published the first two volumes, with Volume 3 scheduled for release on November 19, 2024.
Manga Plus describes the story as:
Gokurakugai, a bright and bustling working class district that hides a dark side. In this lawless area, Tao and Alma work as troubleshooters for hire. Their missions involve helping a boy find his lost friend, a person who has disappeared without a trace, and the disfigured corpses of animals. At the same time, the evil spirits that live in the shadows bring out another side to these troubleshooters!
The Gokurakugai manga series has 800,000 copies in circulation as of August 30, 2024 for the first three volumes.
