However, the surprises fans experience are not unusual in the Jujutsu Kaisen experience. Rather, it was a deliberate creative choice by author Gege Akutami that made the series one of the best fighting manga ever.
In Jujutsu Kaisen chapter 236, Ryomen Sukuna made one of the most shocking comebacks in shounen manga history with a once-in-a-lifetime move that wiped out Gojo. Up to this point, Sukuna had lost every stage of the war. This does not mean he is superior or lacking in the ability to defeat Gojo. On the contrary, Sukuna is giving Gojo the battle of his life. But Gojo’s mastery of his innate cursed ability Limitless and his great tactical intelligence allowed him to overcome every trick Sukuna threw at him.

At the start of the match, fans understood that there was no guarantee that either side would win the match without any challenges. This duel was teased in the very first chapter and during that time, fans learned a lot about Gojo and Sukuna’s abilities. That build-up is what has fans so excited to finally see how this epic confrontation will play out. When the time for the two to face off finally came in chapter 236, it seemed like Gojo was a much better fighter than the Cursed King.
Things came to a head when Sukuna, who was quickly running out of options, pulled out his most dangerous trump card – Mahoraga. Immediately, Gojo was pushed into an unsafe position. But just like the previous match, Gojo seemed to have found a way to counter his opponent and his victory felt more like a guarantee.
No one predicted Gojo’s sudden death
Gege’s masterful bait-and-switch technique is highlighted in chapter 236.
Out of nowhere, Sukuna managed to turn the tide of battle in a way that challenged even the most complex magical science in Jujutsu Kaisen. After pages of intense action, the infamous fan-favorite jujutsu magician Satoru Gojo has been defeated. Final, Gojo’s fate proved Jujutsu Kaisen to be a masterpiece. Few other manga characters of Gojo’s stature are killed off so suddenly. Gege’s execution was carried out so smoothly that most fans never saw it happen, even though Gojo’s death was foretold years ago.
