Summary
Gohan easily defeats Frieza in his base form, demonstrating his extreme power levels surpassing even Goku’s. Goku must transform into a Super Saiyan to defeat Frieza, which highlights Gohan’s strength, as he defeats Frieza without going Super Saiyan. Gohan’s victory over Frieza involving Goku raises the question of whether he is the only one capable of stopping Black Frieza in Dragon Ball Super.
Both Gohan and Frieza have undergone several major power-ups in the past Dragon ball canon, with Frieza gaining his Black Frieza form and Gohan unlocking his Beast Gohan transformation, meaning it’s only a matter of time before the two of them face off in Dragon Ball Super. However, long before these more recent developments, Gohan and Frieza had a one-on-one battle, a battle that demonstrated how far Gohan had surpassed not only Frieza but also Goku.
To be fair, Goku proved himself to be the most invincible warrior that fans know him to be today thanks to his battle with Frieza. It was during that battle (starting in Dragon Ball chapter 307 by Akira Toriyama) that Goku first became a Super Saiyan (occurred in Dragon Ball chapter 317).
At the end of their battle, Frieza is in his ‘final form’ and Goku is a Super Saiyan, and Goku just barely manages to win. This means that Frieza’s final form is almost as strong as the first generation Super Saiyan, which is especially notable in the context of Gohan’s fight with Frieza years later.
Gohan defeats Frieza’s final form with just one punch
Goku needs to go Super Saiyan to defeat Frieza!
In the anime movie Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn, while Goku and Vegeta are busy fighting Janemba in hell, a group of villains flood Earth from the afterlife, and one of them doesn’t. Who else is Frieza? After his resurrection, the only thing still on Frieza’s to-do list is killing Goku. Goku may not have been the one to kill Frieza (that honor belongs to Trunks), but he was the first Saiyan to defeat him, which means Frieza wanted revenge on Goku more than anything.
When Frieza was unable to find Goku, he decided that his son, Gohan (with whom he also briefly fought Namek) would be a suitable replacement. However, Frieza greatly underestimated Gohan, as the half-Saiyan warrior sent Frieza back to hell with a single punch to the stomach – no Super Saiyan power-up required.
Gohan may be the only one who can stop Black Frieza in Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Super needs to resolve this Gohan vs Frieza conflict once and for all!
Black Frieza one-shot Ultra Instinct Goku and Ultra Ego Vegeta in Dragon Ball Super chapter 87!
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn is not officially canon, but whether something is canon or not simply speaks to events taking place in Dragon Ball continuity, not power levels. Therefore, it is true that Gohan is as strong as Super Saiyan 1 Goku in his base form around the time of the ‘Majin Buu Saga’. This means that Gohan has surpassed his father’s power level to the extreme. Goku struggled to defeat Frieza in his final form as a Super Saiyan while Gohan one shot that Frieza in his base form. Can this disparity translate to their current peak form?
If Super Saiyan 1 Goku is on par with base level Gohan, what does Ultra Instinct Goku mean in terms of Gohan’s true power level as Beast Gohan? That was the question raised by Gohan’s resounding victory over Frieza in Fusion Reborn, as it not only proved how much Gohan had surpassed his father at the time, but also showed that Gohan might be the one Dragon ball warrior strong enough to defeat Black Frieza.
