Summary
Deku’s strongest Quirk in My Hero Academia is Gearshift, which allows him to control the speed and trajectory of objects he touches. Gearshift goes beyond regular super-speed Quirks, as it can bend the laws of physics and inertia, allowing Deku to move at supersonic speeds. However, using Gearshift comes with consequences, such as immobilization and a time limit of five minutes, making it a last resort for Deku.
As the final battle against Shigaraki is about to take place, My Hero Academy revealed every Quirk in Deku’s arsenal, including possibly his most powerful one, Gearshift. The latest chapters of My Hero Academia finally shed light on the identity of the second user of One For All and his Quirk, a potential game-changer in the Final War.
First officially introduced in chapter #369, Gearshift initially belonged to One For All’s second user, who was later revealed to be Kudo. At its core, Gearshift allows Deku to change the speed and trajectory of anything he touches, including himself.
What makes it different from the regular speed Quirk is Gearshift allows Deku to bend the laws of physics and inertia and control objects moving at supersonic speeds, bending realistically. However, while there is virtually no limit to the speeds Gearshift can achieve, the power does come with its limitations.
Deku uses Gearshift as two techniques
Transmission and acceleration
Deku’s use of Gearshift primarily comes in the form of two techniques—Transmission and Overdrive, which effectively enhance many of his existing attacks. The channeling ability allows Deku to increase attack speed with level with each successive punch. This increase in speed occurs in levels called Gears, specifically Low Gear, Second Gear, Third Gear, and Top Gear, each of which allows Deku to move faster than sound.

My Hero Academia’s Deku just stole Luffy’s strongest move
My Hero Academia’s Deku just stole Luffy’s signature move from One Piece, as the young hero unleashes the ultimate power of One for All: equipment switching!
Meanwhile, Overdrive uses Gearshift in conjunction with Fa Jin to propel Deku forward at high speeds, giving him a tremendous increase in both speed and strength. Using Gearshift in such a way has resulted in many of Deku’s strongest attacks in My Hero Academia to date, such as “Quintuple Detroit Smash”.
Changing gears comes with severe consequences
No matter how powerful Gearshift is, it comes with many risks. The recoil from moving at such high speeds can immobilize Deku afterwards, as shown in chapter #406. Furthermore, currently, Deku can only use Gearshift for a maximum of five minutes. The consequences of using Gearshift without caution, along with the limited amount of time Deku can use it, make Gearshift a last resort.

Regardless, Deku has managed to tap into the true potential of Gearshift, which has grown exponentially since its merger with One For All. Although Gearshift was initially an ineffective Quirk, limited to shooting small projectiles such as bullets when possessed by Kudo, it has become the most powerful Quirk that Deku has at his disposal and will certainly play an important role in the final part of the film.
