The Notable History of Fullmetal Alchemist
Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga appeared in Square Enix’s Shōnen Gangan magazine from July 2001 to June 2010 and the series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide. As such, it is one of the best-selling manga of all time alongside other classics like Yoshihiro Togashi’s YuYu Hakusho and Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail. Furthermore, during its initial release, Arakawa’s work received many prestigious awards; it won the shōnen category at the 2004 Shogakukan Manga Awards and the Seiun Award for best science fiction manga in 2011.
Studio Bones adapted the manga into two different anime. The first Fullmetal Alchemist series aired from 2003 to 2004 and differed greatly from the original material, having a completely original ending. The second chapter, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, premiered in 2009 and ended in 2010. Its story follows the events of Arakawa’s story much more closely.
Arakawa’s manga is distributed in North America by VIZ Media, and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Hulu. There is also a live-action trilogy featuring Ryosuke Yamada as Edward and Atom Mizuishi as Alphonse available to stream on Netflix.
