Fan A piece Just received news about one anime remake, and it’s not only surprising but also completely unprecedented. In fact, Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece may be the first anime series in history to be adapted a second time while still airing, more so while its story is far from over.
In honor of One Piece’s 25th anniversary, Wit Studio recently announced that they will be re-adapting One Piece’s East Blue Saga in partnership with Netflix. The remake aims to showcase the beginning of Luffy’s adventures in a new way to attract new audiences. Although a lot of anime has been remade and rebooted over the years, One Piece is the first series to receive a remake while the original series is still airing.
With the huge success of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece attracting fans from every corner of the world, it’s no surprise that the series would look to capitalize on the growing interest. for the series, making history in the process.

With One Piece’s reputation for being astronomically long at over a thousand episodes, adding more episodes to that ever-growing list makes this decision even more unusual. That said, the One Piece remake promises to be different from the original and it is potentially fix One Piece’s oft-complained pacing issues while attracting new fans who may have moved on from the live-action adaptation, who may have felt uncomfortable with the older animated version.
On that note, anime reboots are often successful, most evident in the case of series like Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Hunter x Hunter. However, The One Piece remake could end up being a double-edged sword depending on the final outcome and its reception, both are difficult to rate at present, despite Wit Studio’s reputation and stellar adaptations.
Regardless, an eventful year awaits fans of the series with Netflix’s live-action One Piece confirmed for season 2, as well as an adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s other manga ( and One Piece prequel) Monsters will release in January 2024.
