From Villain to Hero: Kokichi’s Journey
Created by MAPPA, based on the original manga by Gege Akutami
Back at the Tokyo Goodwill Arc, Panda had a very difficult match against Mechamaru. It is revealed that Mechamaru is actually a puppet controlled by a wizard named Kokichi Muta, who is both cursed and blessed. In exchange for a huge amount of cursed energy and an incredible distance range to control the puppets, he was given an extremely weak body. He was bedridden and imprisoned in a dark room for his entire life, possessing what is known as the Heavenly Pact technique. He hates his powers and longs for a normal life.
Episode 6 reveals that Kokichi was the spy who assisted Geto and Hanami in infiltrating Jujutsu High, but he was tricked and had no idea that the students would be targeted in the attack. In exchange for giving them information, Mahito will use his power, which allows him to change a person’s body, to give Kokichi a normal body. Instead, his actions that could be considered treacherous add layers of depth to him. Kokichi fought Mahito as soon as he got his new body with a plot to kill him after the deal was made while secretly constructing an incredible puppet.
After an incredible battle to open the Shibuya Incident Arc, Kokichi lost. It is assumed that he was killed because Mahito and Geto were cruel and did not let him live. The latest episode of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 revealed that may not happen. After Gojo was sealed in the Prison World, a small puppet that looked exactly like Mechamaru appeared in Itadori’s ear, hastily telling Itadori to listen and not to ask anything. The episode ends with the puppet telling Itadori that “Gojo Satoru has been sealed,” confirming that Kokichi Muta is still alive.
How he survived is a mystery. It is known that he can control a puppet from anywhere in Japan, meaning his current whereabouts are also unknown. He still had 9 years of curse energy left after his fight with Mahito, so he could have healed himself the same way Gojo did in his fight with Toji. What fans do know is that he is still alive and with all the information he holds, he will definitely be important in this installment. From a character with a simple background to a traitor, and now a hero gradually redeeming himself, Kokichi Muta had some of the most interesting character development in Jujutsu Kaisen.
