One Piece Film: Red had a profound impact on Eiichiro Oda’s father.
A trusted One Piece news translator on X/Twitter named Sandman (or @Sandman_AP) recounted the story of how Seiichiro Oda texted his son shortly after the premiere of One Piece Film: Red to say told him that he was “touched” by it. According to Sandman, Oda was surprised by the reaction because he didn’t know if his elderly father, who was 77 years old at the time, could understand the film. One Piece Film: Red continues to become Japan’s highest-grossing film of 2022, grossing over 19.7 billion yen during its theatrical run.
The story of One Piece Film: Red begins when the Straw Hats arrive on the island of Elegia to see the popular idol Uta’s concert. Upon arrival, they learn that Uta is actually the daughter of Red-Haired Shanks and Luffy’s childhood friend. While Shanks has been away for years, the infamous pirate captain reappears knowing that Uta wants to use her music to create an idyllic new world. Much of the film’s content revolves around Uta’s complex character arc, which is conveyed to the audience through her songs.
A new era for One Piece
Although Uta has previously appeared in the One Piece manga, Film: Red has made her iconic, with hundreds of fans across the web honoring her through cosplay and fanart. Movie: Red also focuses attention on Shanks, a character that has long been shrouded in mystery despite being the driving force behind Luffy’s inspiration. Toei Animation recently released One Piece Film: Red on Blu-ray, which includes three additional episodes that lay the foundation for the film’s plot. The episodes are titled, “A Faint Memory! Luffy and the Red- Haired’s Daughter Uta!,” “A Pledge For the New Genesis! Luffy and Uta!” and “The Captain’s Legendary Diary! Red-haired Shanks!”
August is considered an important month for One Piece fans. The film adaptation of Toei Animation’s popular series sees the launch of Luffy Gear 5 on August 6. This is Luffy’s strongest phase, granting him the powers of the Sun God. The first live-action One Piece series will also premiere on August 31.
