Dragon Ball fans can now pre-order the limited edition figurines of Majin Buu and Kid Buu.
Available through Sideshow in partnership with merchandise maker Jimei Palace, the collection includes two versions of the iconic pink villain, both featuring devastating bursts of energy . Standing between 22″ and 18.5″ tall and retailing for $800, the company will only produce 399 sets and shipping will begin sometime between July 2024 and September 2024.
Dragon Ball Begins in 1984
The beloved Dragon Ball major franchise began in 1984 when Akira Toriyama published the first chapter of his freak manga of the same name in Shuiesha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump, with the final chapter published in 1995. The story follows the protagonist Son Goku from childhood through adulthood as a food-loving, fighting-loving martial artist embarks on colorful adventures. Over the years, Goku and his companions encounter and battle countless strange but dangerous enemies. Majin Buu is one such villain, alongside icons like the biological android Cell and the galactic tyrant Frieza.
Along with Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and Takao Saito’s Golgo 13, Toriyama’s masterpiece is one of the best-selling manga of all time, with over 260 million copies sold worldwide. The latest spin-off series, Dragon Ball Super, recently entered its latest arc, adapting the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie. So far, the story has been closely linked to the original material — a move that disappointed some readers with repetition while delighting others. Like the original, Dragon Ball Super was a financial success, with Vol. 18 sold more than 193,000 copies alone.
Dragon Ball fans show their support through art
Dragon Ball fans not only show their appreciation for the story and its characters by purchasing manga volumes or purchasing collector’s items; they also create impressive pieces of fan-generated content. For example, a talented cosplayer created an outfit that transforms the super-masculine Vegeta into a feminine, elegant and powerful one at the same time.
Furthermore, popular cosplayer Rikkaxrose has shared their reimagining of the fan-favorite character Bulma Briefs. Instead of dressing up the blue-haired science genius in a wardrobe identical to the manga, the costume master created a classic rabbit costume. Bulma and Vegeta’s son, Trunks, also received a fan-driven change; Earlier in the year, former League of Legends concept artist Hicham Habchi uploaded an illustration of the sword-wielding teenager showing what he might look like if he were more like his father.
