One of the most popular characters in Dragon Ball Z is a warrior from another timeline – Future Trunks. In the timeline where Future Trunks lived, the earth was almost destroyed, almost all the Z warriors died. Why does such a thing happen?
Dragon Ball Super has revealed the reason for this terrible thing, pointing to a small but important villain that led to the disaster. That’s Pilaf.
In a brief flashback chapter, Dragon Ball Super “visits” Future Trunks’ timeline. At a critical juncture, when Trunks was still a child and the battle against Android 17 and 18 continued, Goku succumbed to a heart virus and died. With the strongest character gone, the Z warriors were unable to defeat the two Androids created by Dr. Gero. Then Gohan and Bulma desperately searched for the Dragon Balls.

The story of what happened in the Future Trunks timeline was revealed at the end of volume 2 of the Dragon Ball Super manga. Pilaf and his two subordinates, Mai and Shu, searched for enough dragon balls to summon the dragon god Shenron. However, Pilaf ignores Shu’s warning, wishing he could be young again. Unfortunately, Shenron misunderstood the group’s intentions and turned them all into babies.
The point is that this is the last wish Shenron makes in this timeline. Because Piccolo died shortly after, causing the dragon balls to turn into normal stones. Also no one knows how to get to planet Namek to ask Dende to wish with the dragon god NameK to revive Piccolo and the Z warriors.

Pilaf’s actions not only destroy the world of Future Trunks but also “seal” the tragic fate of the earth. Each “stealing” an essential wish from Bulma and Gohan, Pilaf set the stage for the downfall of the Z warriors, leaving only Bulma and the aging Trunks in a dystopian future.
In summary, this short chapter has explained some inconsistencies, such as Mai’s future age. It is Pilaf’s reckless desire that greatly reduces his chances of defeating the Androids, creating the darkest timeline in the series.
After all, the presence of King Pilaf, which was thought to be a minor annoyance, turned into a big problem. The story of Pilaf and his intervention in the Future Trunks timeline is a testament to how even minor characters can have a significant impact.
