One of the few times that seven dragon pearls the anime’s excessive use of exclusive scenes and stretched moments from the manga that really benefit a character is in the infamous death of Chiaotzuan underrated Z fighter.
Chiaotzu is a special Dragon Ball Z character based on a Chinese vampire. Arguably, Chiaotzu’s decisive moment in the entirety of Dragon Ball occurred when he sacrificed his life to take down the then unstoppable Nappa. In chapter #217 of the manga, Chiaotzu’s moment of glory spans only two pages and a panel, as he clings to Nappa’s back as the Saiyans try to grab him before the Earthlings self-destruct, no real effect on his opponent. Meanwhile, episode #24 of the Dragon Ball Z anime spends more than five minutes on Chiaotzu’s brave efforts. In addition to showing multiple flashbacks to make Chiaotzu’s death all the more emotional, Nappa goes to great lengths to remove the Earthling from his back. This consisted of slamming him into a variety of formation ground and almost completing his free fall onto a thorny surface.
Chiaotzu’s brave death shows the potential of Dragon Ball Z anime anime
Although his overall actions are heroic in the manga, Chiatzu doesn’t endure half as much as his anime counterpart before he performs his final attack. In the anime, Chiaotzu is able to withstand being bumped against various hard surfaces, each of which makes it less and less likely that he can make his big move. Piccolo even used Chiaotzu’s pain and his unfortunate circumstances during a loss as a teachable moment for Gohan to help the young Saiyan understand what fighting really is and absorb everything. he sees, no matter how gruesome it may be.
Of course, the bulk of the scenes added in this battle alone is more than enough to annoy even the most patient viewers. Since the anime incorporates a live stream of the Baba fortune teller’s battle, Master Roshi, Bulma, Puar, and Oolong all have time to react accordingly. Some of these moments are necessary, such as the reaction to Yamcha’s embarrassing death to the Saibamen, but most of them distract too much from the actual fight. This also applies to Chiatzu’s death, as the beginning of episode 24 shows them all talking for far too long.
Chiaotzu deserves more Anime focus on his sacrifice
Usually, the vast majority of fans use Yamcha as their primary reference point to demonstrate how useless humans have become in Dragon Ball Z.. But Chiaotzu is permanently given the shorter end of the stick, even in the original series. Aside from the irony that most of the facts about Chiaotzu come from spin-offs and unorthodox movies, the only major contributions he’s ever made in Dragon Ball has to do with the end. uses his remote control to illegally match contestants in Tenkaichi tournaments. Chiaotzu doesn’t even win a single battle in the series, even when Krillin shamefully takes advantage of Chiaotzu’s inability to count without relying on his hands.
So Chiaotzu’s heroic sacrifice against Nappa was to redeem at least one character that Toriyama knew would go unnoticed in his story. Therefore, he deserves as much glory as possible for that moment, and while the manga gave Chiaotzu a sacrifice scene that fans still discuss today, seven dragon pearls anime just makes it so much better.
seven dragon pearls can be read on Viz.com and streamed on Crunchyroll.
