The power levels that Goku and Vegeta achieved in Dragon Ball Super led many fans to believe that Saiyans have no limits.
The two warriors continue to improve their fighting and martial arts skills, while training with two of the most important figures among the gods of Universe 7. Goku excels with Ultra Instinct, while Vegeta impresses with Ultimate Ego. Everything seems to indicate that they are on the path to becoming gods, a matter that has taken a certain emotional toll on the Dragon Ball stories.
However, while it seems like Goku and Vegeta will be able to overcome anything, an old interview by the late artist Akira Toriyama from 2015, when Dragon Ball Super debuted its manga version, revealed that Saiyans have limits.
In his first statements about Dragon Ball's return to classic adventures, Akira Toriyama said that Vegeta and Goku would never be able to surpass the two new characters that debuted in this installment. They are the God of Destruction Beerus and the Angel Whis of Universe 7.
Goku and Vegeta's Limits in the Dragon Ball Universe
Are Goku and Vegeta really never going to surpass Beerus and Whis? Akira Toriyama's statement at the time, reviewed by MeriStation in a recent note, suggested that Goku and Vegeta surpassing the two gods was not part of the author's plan at the time. However, that leaves open the possibility that it won't be the case in the future.
Here's what Akira Toriyama said at the time: “Well… to start with, I currently have no plans to let Goku and Vegeta surpass Beerus and Whis.”
At the time the author gave the answer, it was not in the plan for Goku and Vegeta to surpass Beerus and Whis. But later on, they could at least surpass Beerus, because Universe 7's Angel Whis gave them the ability to become Gods of Destruction in the future.
So based on what's happening in Dragon Ball Super, both Goku and Vegeta have a chance of surpassing Beerus. Defeating the God of Destruction would represent a major step forward for the two Saiyan warriors.
