Before the highly anticipated Netflix anime remake of One Piece, THE ONE PIECE, debuted, original manga author Eiichiro Oda took the lead in calling for the series to stand on its own, not simply adapt the original work as closely as possible.
Through the Netflix Anime YouTube channel “THE ONE PIECE | Production Notes Vol. 1: Staff Interview,” director Masashi Koizuka revealed Oda’s advice to the staff before the remake. “I remember Oda-sensei telling us through his comments, ‘I want you all to express yourself instead of copying and pasting,’” he said. “‘For example, it’s about creating your own interpretation and expression rather than recreating a panel of a manga.’ I felt that ONE PIECE allowed us to work in different ways, and these young, enthusiastic staff were all able to rise to the challenge.”

Netflix's 'The One Piece' anime remake team aims to improve on the original manga
The staff gave their take on how they plan to follow and deviate from Oda's original work in other parts of the interview. Animation director Tomonori Kuroda talked about mimicking the softness and roundness of his lines; Koizuka talked about how the goal is not to imitate the manga panels to “perfection,” but instead to capture the emotions fans feel when reading them. In doing so, he aims to go beyond perfection. To support this, Koizuka is drawing inspiration from younger staff members who grew up reading One Piece, who serve as motivation to faithfully capture the original series.[Those] “People who are passionate about a particular comic strip,” Koizuka said, “and people who like to read books all come together as one team. ‘This is it,’ [they say]“This is the important part.”
WIT Studio's THE ONE PIECE will also use modern technology to recreate the original manga without having to depict it in a 1:1 scale. Koizuka showed off their 3D maps of different settings, giving the example of the Marine base in Shells Town. The map allows the staff to explore different angles to show Morgan's dominance over the town in a way that the manga didn't necessarily do. This will be through wide shots and the ability to even change or “improve” some settings by taking ideas from the team.
