Now fans can get a better look at Disney’s Dragons of Wonderhatch, which is due out later this year.
Disney+ released a new teaser trailer for the live-action/anime crossover Dragons of Wonderhatch on October 23 via YouTube. The description of the TV series reads: “The real world we live in, depicted in live-action, and a fantasy world with dragons, depicted in anime, brought to you by Disney+! This brand new story that no one has seen before depicts two worlds, Yokosuka in live-action and the dragon fantasy world of Upananta in the anime.” The teaser introduces the two main characters — Japanese schoolgirl Nagi and the dragon rider from another world, Tyme.
The latest teaser confirms new additions to the cast from the previous trailer released this year, including Rena Tanaka, Masami Miura, Riko Narumi and SUMIRE. Tanaka joins as Nagi’s mother, Hana, while Miura joins as Nagi’s father. Notably, Hana passed away in the series, leaving Miura to raise Nagi as a single father.
The new teaser introduces Nagi (Sena Nakajima), a female student seeking adventure to bring change to her current life. She longs for another world that will bring that excitement, and one day, when she is longing for someone to bring that change, Tyme (Daiken Okudaira) appears – a failed dragon rider from Upananta world. He explains that he and his friend, Akuta, came together to save their world. Akuta is played by none other than Zoro, Mackenyu Arata in live-action One Piece. Tyme also appears with his dragon friend, Gafin.
Dragons of Wonderhatch marks an exciting new addition to Disney’s growing roster of Asian dramas following the launch of the Star franchise in 2021. Under the leadership of Disney’s CEO at the time, Bob Chapek, the company has made good on its intention to produce more Japanese films, Korean and Chinese Stories. Dragons of Wonderhatch joins other Japanese franchises such as The Tatami Galaxy sequels, Tatami Galaxy Blues, Tatami Galaxy Blues, as well as the recent Korean hit Moving.
Dragons of Wonderhatch is directed by Kentaro Hagiwara (live-action Tokyo Ghoul) and Takashi Otsuka (One Piece Stampede). Character designs were handled by The Promised Neverland creator Posuka Demizu, and the anime portion of the series was produced by Production IG (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, Kill Bill Vol. 1).
