Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 66: Hidden Inventory, Part 2
While Gojo’s reference does have Digimon canonized in Jujustu Kaisen, it’s more than just a random, one-off mention or joke. It’s a short but noteworthy exchange that should at least help Digimon fans quickly grasp a confusing situation in the series. Gojo uses Digimon to explain his concerns to Master Tengen, as well as the importance of keeping balance between the world of cursed souls and the human world. Since Tengen is immortal, as long as his body is still quite young, he can help the Jujutsu sorcerers exorcise cursed spirits. However, if his body becomes too old, he will begin to evolve into a cursed soul. If that happens, he could be used by other cursed spirits to harm humanity. So to avoid this, every 500 years he needs to find a young body to “possess” to reset his clock.
As Gojo explains: Master Tengen’s evolution would have been acceptable if he had stopped at the Metal Greymon stage. Metal Greymons has been digitized from an all-skinned Digimon to an almost fully digitized robot version. As a Metal Greymon, Tengen is a powerful ally as he retains much of his reason. However, if Tengen were to fully evolve, he would be like Skull Greymon, or a Digimon digested into a form incapable of rational thought. As a Skull Greymon, Tengen will be a danger to anyone who comes into contact with him. As a result, Tengen needs to “degenerate” into Koromon. Koromons is a fairly harmless Digimon that can only blow foam at opponents but can evolve into several stronger forms.
Not only is this an explanation that even a 5 year old can understand, but it also shows that Gojo is a real Digimon, otherwise his references would be confusing and misleading . It makes sense that Gojo is also a fan of the franchise. First, like the DigiDestined, Mages are empowered with powers and devices that they use to fight evil beings from other dimensions. Second, only people with the same level of passion, will and drive can Digimon fans wanted a brand that was often ridiculed and ignored to rise to the top Jujutsu Kaisen universe.
