In the upcoming Pokémon game, Detective Pikachu returns, fans can once again join Tim Goodman and Detective Pikachu in solving mysteries.
As a sequel to Detective Pikachu, the game is all set to arrive on Nintendo Switch this year. In an interview with ComicBook.com, director Yasunori Yanagisawa talked about the possibility of bringing another Pokémon into a detective game.
Yanagisawa expressed his interest in Pichu, the youthful version of Pikachu, introduced in the second generation of the original series. The director suggests an intriguing dynamic, imagining how Pichu could become an assistant to the seasoned detective. “So maybe Pichu is like an apprentice,” he said. Looking at the relationship between Pikachu and Pichu, it’s not difficult to imagine the older character managing a younger Pichu who is assigned small jobs.
Pikachu in the Detective Pikachu series sets himself apart from his peers in the traditional Pokémon games and animated series. In the original Detective Pikachu game for the Nintendo 3DS, Pikachu possesses distinct movements, including dramatic poses when uncovering important clues. Yanagisawa revealed that they once again used motion capture for Detective Pikachu Returns to ensure quality. To capture the essence of an older character, they invited a middle-aged actor to participate in the motion capture process.
Surprisingly, Yanagisawa was inspired by the demeanor of an older man to develop the character of Detective Pikachu. This influence goes beyond mere movements or personality traits. His passion for coffee and drinking personality of an “old man” fit very well with Detective Pikachu’s personality.
As for which Pokémon will appear in Detective Pikachu Returns, players can expect to encounter fan favorites like Whimsicott, Ducklett, Raboot, Pawniard, and Growlithe. The decision to include specific Pokémon will be related to their unique characteristics and compatibility with the game’s environment. Additionally, the developers’ personal preferences may also play an important role, as shown by Yanagisawa’s affection for the fire-type Pokémon, Growlithe, due to his fondness for dogs.
A spin-off of the long-running Pokemon role-playing video game series, the first installment of Detective Pikachu was released in 2018. A joint venture between Nintendo and the Pokemon company, the game achieved critical success. commercially and critically. It was adapted into a Hollywood live action film, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, starring Ryan Reynolds as the title character.
Detective Pikachu Returns will be released on October 6, 2023.
