Warning: Spoiler for Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc, episode 6demon slayer takes a moment from the action at the Blacksmith’s Village to dive into Genya’s base story, and the tragic reveal makes sense for a Hashira, who hasn’t really appeared much in the series so far. .
When the demons began to attack the village, only a few Assassins were present: Tanjiro and Nezuko, the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito, Demon Slayer Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji, and Tanjiro’s rookie Assassin, Genya Shinazugawa. Genya himself had aspirations to become a Hashira, but he was still too new to the Demon Slayer Corps to achieve such an achievement. However, the episode reveals that Genya’s brother is not only a Demon Hunter, but also the Pillar of Wind himself, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and what makes them Assassins is just as tragic as Tanjiro and Nezuko’s story.
Genya is actually Wind Hashira’s brother
When Genya felt the thundering rod of the demon of Rage descending on his head, he tearfully reminisced about his past and how his journey to becoming Hashira ended in failure. Genya recalls her childhood, where their abusive father was murdered during a disagreement, leaving their family in a difficult situation. Genya and Sanemi’s mother spends all day taking care of the children and all night working, leaving the two brothers to look after the five younger siblings at night. However, one fateful day, when their mother came home late, Sanemi went out to find her, leaving Genya to guard the others. A knock on the door caused the children to jubilantly open the door, longing to see their mother, but instead they were greeted by a beastly form that killed the brothers instantly; As the sun rose, Genya saw Sanemi fighting the monster, only to realize it was actually their mother, who had been turned into a demon and who had quickly disappeared at sunrise. With no family of their own, the two brothers devoted themselves to preventing this from happening to anyone else, while avenging both their family and their mother.
Genya & Tanjiro are more similar than Demon Slayer fans think
The stories of the Hashiras vary widely, but none have the same past as Tanjiro; However, somehow, Genya and Sanemi’s history is somewhat worse, as at least it was a random demon that attacked the Tanjiro family, rather than a family member that turned against them. . Genya has been behaving like he has a chip on his shoulder the whole time, and it’s finally clear why. Genya wants to prove to his brother that he didn’t fail that day and that he is strong enough to protect them now, even if he couldn’t then. As a Hashira, Sanemi has clearly been pushed to the next level by this tragedy, so Genya must prove that he has the same ability.
Given that Sanemi doesn’t have many roles to play yet, it’s interesting that his backstory has been revealed. demon slayer were adept at revealing Hashira’s back stories and looking at what motivated them to dedicate their lives to such a cause, and this is possibly one of the most intriguing Hashira’s origins.
