Another week, another excellent episode of Delicious in Dungeon.
Episode 7 is a great Neapolitan episode that features the elements I love from the series: fun world-building, great character work, and an interesting dungeon ecosystem.
The feeling of a place worth living here is strong. The large indoor lake makes for a fun and welcoming obstacle course for the party. Water features always pose great challenges for traditional adventuring parties, and I like that even the solution isn’t a complete solution. Marcelille’s fix magic is a clever use of utility magic but the Senshi are so dirty that the magic doesn’t stick. Simply amazing and it tells us a lot about who the cast is and how they see the world. It’s also a scenario that I find very suitable for my tabletop role-playing experience, as I often confuse players with seemingly simple challenges like a wide river or a broken bridge. collapsed and watched them struggle for hours to get through. It’s very fitting that the entire episode revolves around getting from one end to the other.
All the adorable character scenes between the actors were also great. Marceille fixing the Senshi’s beard is interesting, even if it’s just a montage of exposition. The Senshi’s big bushy beard takes over after being cleaned, Laios gets parasites in his stomach from eating parasites, it’s all hilarious and charming.
The ecological aspects of the dungeon are also very interesting. I thought the reveal that the Senshi were perhaps overestimating their impact on the ecosystem was an interesting note that we don’t see often. We need to care for and respect the environment, but we must also caution ourselves against thinking we completely understand it or our place in it. The world is always larger than we realize. Combine that with the Senshi knowing that he probably trusts monsters more than humans—thus allowing himself to be vulnerable to Marceille—and that’s this week’s winner.
