With a brand new season comes brand new anime series, and April has seen Crunchyroll released an anime about the magical girl that was already a contender for the weirdest series of the year. With so many new movies being released and even more coming soon, it’s hard for these new anime series to stand out from the crowd. However, Mahou Shoujo Magical Terminator won’t have that problem.
Mahou Shoujo Magical Terminator, or just Magic Terminator, released the first volume on Crunchyroll on April 8 and has been a huge hit. Its strikingly bright animation blends in perfectly with the story’s uncanny premise, with so many little details to even the background characters that something new can be found with every rewatch. The animation aesthetic alone is enough to make the series stand out, but the fact that the series follows a group of otakus form a revolt against their backward lords with the help of of three new magical girls is what really sets this anime apart from other anime series. Spring anime in Crunchyroll’s lineup. After all, this is a brand new series idea, and fans are loving it.
Magic Terminator might be the weirdest character in Magic Girl Anime
Unlike many other anime this season, Magic Terminator is not based on a manga or novel. Instead, the idea came from a new name in the industry, Jun Inagawa. Perhaps the fresh eye of a newcomer to the industry is what makes this series so refreshing. Instead of playing with recent trends, such as isekai, this series dares to be unique with its engaging approach to magical girl stories.
Magic Terminator follows several main characters, but the protagonist is a young nerd known only as Hero Otaku. After a strange organization takes over Japan and brainwashes its people, an otaku culture crackdown begins under the pretext of protecting Japan. Everything related to popular culture was thrown in the trash and otaku of all kinds were collected and sent to camps. Regardless of how strong this SSC organization is, a rebellion forms, led by the Hero Otaku himself. However, the uprising made little progress after three years of being imprisoned by the otaku. This is when the magical girls come into play. Angered by the recent otaku siege and wanting to reunite with his disappeared fellow magical girls, Anarchy decides that it’s time to strike and begin destroying the otaku. Of course, the otaku were not born belligerents, but with some (not too mild) encouragement, the rebellion went away, determined to save their culture.
Full of girls’ transformation spells, silly combat tactics, and some of the most unpredictable action sequences in anime, Magical Terminator is truly one of a kind. Despite only releasing the first episode, fans are already excited to see where this story will end. As really weird as it is, Crunchyroll’s Magic Destroyer is on its way to becoming the next anime sensation.
new episode of Magic Destroyer premieres on Crunchyroll every Saturday.
