Suncatcher by Studio Ghibli Merchandise Homage to Flight Movie Theme
Ghibli’s “Windy City” series of sun-kissed films celebrates the beauty of flight — a prominent motif in almost every film by Ghibli co-founder director Hayao Miyazaki. As attentive Ghibli fans will notice, the scene in My Neighbor Totoro features the beloved scene where Satsuki and Mei jump onto the spirit’s giant belly and ride it across the night sky. The attached charm depicts the iconic soot motifs, which also appeared in Miyazaki’s 2001 film Spirited Away. Meanwhile, Kiki Delivery Service’s Suncatcher recreates Kiki flying through the sky on her broom surrounded by seagulls. Kiki’s charm features the logo of her flight service, hanging in the window of the bakery owned by her friend, Osono.
Last but not least, the sunshade for Howl’s Moving Castle recreates the first meeting between its titular witch and Sophie, a young woman cursed to take on the body of an old man. 90 years old. During this first meeting, Howl rescues Sophie and takes her for a merry walk through the air. The attached amulet also depicts Calcifer, the wise fire demon who presides over Howl’s moving castle. As a testament to the character’s popularity, Calcifer is also featured in Ghibli’s collection of handmade wool coasters, which Donguri Sora recently restocked after seven years.
