To mark the launch of its series, Netflix released a sneak peek clip from the first episode of Castlevania: Nocturne, revealing the origins of monster hunter Richter Belmont.
The seven-minute video reveals the tragic origin story of the young hero who helplessly witnesses the death of his vampire hunter mother. It also introduces Richter to a powerful ancient vampire named Olrox, who has a personal vendetta against his mother. As a descendant of a prestigious vampire hunting clan, Richter must carry on his family’s legacy and continue to protect humanity from the darkness. Before his animated TV debut, he was a longtime fan favorite among fans of the original Castlevania games.
Described as a “compelling story of love and loss,” Castlevania: Nocturne is created by Clive Bradley, who also serves as showrunner alongside Kevin Kolde. The film stars the voices of Edward Bluemel (Killing Eve) as Belmont, Pixie Davies (Mary Poppins Returns) as revolutionary Maria and Sucho Mbedu (The Woman King) as the sorceress Annette. Sydney James Harcourt (Hamilton) plays Edouard, while Nastassja Kinski (Inland Empire) takes on the role of Tera. Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds) plays Olrox, and Franka Potente (Titans) plays vampire queen Erzsebet Báthory.
What to expect from Castlevania: Nocturne
After 300 years since the events of the original series, Castlevania: Nocturne will follow a group of reluctant heroes led by Richter and Maria, who join forces when vampire activity begins to increase, while a revolution was taking place throughout France. According to the official synopsis, the heroes must prepare for the imminent arrival of a ruthless vampire leader who “promises to ‘eat the sun’ and unleash an army of vampires.” and creatures of the night to crush the revolution and enslave humanity.”
Like the original series, animation for Nocturne was once again handled by Powerhouse Animation Studios. Executive producers include Bradley, Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shanka. Project 51 Productions is also producing the series. Sam Deats and Adam Deats will direct eight episodes from a script written by Bradley, Zodwa Nyoni, Temi Oh and Testament.
Created by Warren Ellis, the original Castlevania series ran for four seasons from 2017-2021. The story revolves around Dracula’s bloody revenge against humanity for killing his human wife Lisa, the only person who truly loved and accepted him despite his monstrous nature. Stopping his plans to destroy humanity are the trio of vampire hunter Trevor Belmont, magician Sypha Belnades and Alucard, son of Dracula, who have no choice but to work together.
Castlevania: Nocturne is now available to stream on Netflix.
