Bleach anime shouldn’t be afraid of changing the story of the manga
In episode #7 of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, fans were given a glimpse into the past of Gotei 13 Captain Genryusai Yamamoto. One thousand years before the present time of the series, Yamamoto fought against the Quincy Emperor, Yhwach. In the manga, this battle is never shown and the only information about it is that it supposedly brought the Quincy to the brink of extinction. Instead, the anime not only shows Bleach’s strongest Shinigami, Yamamoto, fighting Yhwach, but also introduces the original captains of the Gotei 13, ten brand new characters who were only briefly mentioned in the manga. The same episode also adds a small but important detail to the battle, showing Yamamoto’s lieutenant, Chojiro Sasakibe, stabbing Yhwach from behind with a surprise attack.
This is the first original content the anime has added to the source material, and it’s a welcome addition. The Thousand Year Blood War arc in the manga is famous for being incoherent, rushed, and leaving many questions unanswered. Bleach author Tite Kubo is sick and wants to complete his story as soon as possible, so there are high hopes for the new anime to fix some of the remaining problems of this arc. The introduction of Bleach’s original Gotei 13 captains, while not having a significant impact on the current story, is at least evidence of that. Likewise, the reveal of Kenpachi Zaraki’s Bankai after a long time is an incredible scene, and the film would have been much worse if it had cut either of these moments. The Millennium Blood War would work best by adding new additional content rather than cutting out what’s already there.
The anime adaptation of Thousand-Year Blood War is being made with Kubo’s participation so all changes are approved by him.
