Black Butler is based on the dark fantasy manga series published by Yana Toboso at Square Enix. The monthly serialized manga G Fantasy began in 2006 and has 33 tankoubon volumes as of July 2023. Yen Press describes the manga as:
Just a short distance from London lies the manor of the illustrious Count Phantomhive, whose owner is Ciel Phantomhive. Count Phantomhive is a titan of commerce, a loyal servant of Queen Victoria… and one fell swoop of a twelve-year-old boy. Luckily, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is always by his side, ready to carry out his young master’s wishes. And whether Sebastian is called upon to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of London’s underworld, there’s practically nothing Sebastian can’t do. In fact, one might even say that Sebastian is too good to be true… or at least, he’s too good to be human.
The previous Black Butler anime was produced by A-1 Pictures. The first season debuted in 2008 and was followed by two more seasons and a two-episode OVA.
