An unexpected crossover makes Berserk’s Guts and Griffith like Barbie and Ken.
One Berserk fan of Kentaro Muira, Aki, recently shared artwork to their Twitter account parodying promotional material for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie. The illustration shows Guts and Griffith, central characters in the dark fantasy series, being shot with a gun after being captured. The characters pose exactly like Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken in the promotional material, with Guts paying for Barbie and Griffith matching Ken.
Guts and Griffith take on the role of Barbie and Ken
The image shows Guts on the left with a worried and panicked expression on his face. Guts looks straight into the camera while holding a sign with his name and reference to Midland, where the manga takes place, printed on it. On the right is Griffith, who appears much more nonchalant, posing for the camera with a wink and a smile. His energy contrasts with Guts and fully reflects the stance that Gosling’s Ken presents in the original.
Guts and Griffith play the beloved protagonist and villain of the Berserk series, respectively. Formerly a lone swordsman roaming Midland searching the battlefield for a living. However, this changes after he meets the latter, a charismatic man named Griffith, who recruits him to his group of mercenaries known as The Band of the Hawk. From there, the series dives into a long story packed with sagas, genres, and iconic moments. This is the property that receives a large amount of fan art, including images of Guts in vintage paintings and even Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fans recreating it in game.
Comments on the post were filled with praise for the artwork, with users loving the parody. One person asked why the characters were arrested, and the artist replied, “Probably killing Lord Julius and his son,” to a scene from the “Golden Age” section of the manga. Others praised the art “Wonderful” or offered phrases like, “Please, this is funny.” Some also mentioned “Griffith!” Iconic Guts! screaming.
Berserk was created by Kentaro Miura, who passed away in 2021 before having a chance to end the series. The artist’s close friend Kouji Mori took over after his death and worked alongside Miura’s former editorial team to continue the story.
The Barbie movie will open on July 21, 2023. In addition, the next chapter of Berserk is scheduled to premiere on May 26, 2023.
