Bardock’s desire for his Dragon Balls to “thrive” in the future is controversial among fans. Dragon Ball Super made it clear that Bardock’s wish ensured that both Goku and Raditz survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta, giving them a chance to “grow” in the future. Although Raditz escaped the destruction of Planet Vegeta and had the potential to become a hero, his early death denied him that opportunity, making it all the more tragic.

During the Granolah the Survivor Arc, fans witnessed a flashback involving Goku’s father Bardock fighting a young Gas on Planet Cereal to protect Granolah and Monaito. At one point, in chapter #83 of Dragon Ball Super Monaito uses his dragon balls to summon the wish-granting dragon Toronbo, and he asks Bardock what wish he should ask for.
Refusing to be taken home in the midst of battle, Bardock only asked “I wish that my sons would grow strong.” He then went on to defeat Gas and return to Planet Vegeta, where he would meet his tragic end.
Bardock’s wish ensures Raditz survives Vegeta’s destruction
This wish has caused a lot of controversy among fans for two reasons. First, some believe that Bardock’s wishes are the reason Goku became a great hero, thereby taking away his autonomy. Second, it seems that wish completely ignored Raditz, who neither thrived nor lived long and was eventually killed by his own brother Goku. However, this is a partial interpretation of Bardock’s wishes that omits some important details revealed later.
As Vegeta said in chapter #84, the effect of the wish is simply to ensure that both Goku and Raditz survive the destruction of Planet Vegeta at the hands of Freeza, thereby giving them the opportunity to “develop development” in the future. Fans know that Goku escaped thanks to his parents putting him in a spaceship and launching him to a distant planet – Earth. However, until now fans only know that Raditz was “going on another mission” and thanks to that he escaped Vegeta’s destruction. Therefore, Raditz simply got lucky, but it is now clear that the reason this happened was due to his father’s wishes..
Raditz was denied the chance to become a hero
However, this realization makes Raditz’s ultimate death even more tragic. Raditz grew up to be an evil Saiyan simply because he did not have the opportunity to learn from his father and mother, who were clearly kind. If Goku hadn’t killed Raditz on Earth, he would have had the same chance to develop, thanks to his father’s wishes, and could have become a great hero after redemption similar to Vegeta, but death His early age denied him that opportunity.
