Despite how much effort he put into Attack on Titan’s Eren Yeager, author Hajime Isayama’s favorite character is not the main character.
During an interview celebrating the launch of K Manga, one of the questions posed to Attack on Titan’s mangaka Hajime Isayama was who his favorite character was. Isayama initially said Jean Kirstein, but after a few seconds of thinking, he changed his answer to Reiner. “He was someone I put a lot of thought into creating,” he explains. “He turned out to be completely different from what I expected. I really enjoyed drawing him.” Isayama has been back and forth with Jean and Reiner for the past few years, but it looks like he’s settled down with Reiner – at least for now.
Attack on Titan’s most memorable scene, according to Isayama
Isayama also detailed why Reiner’s big reveal scene with Eren became one of the most memorable scenes in the manga for him. “I was in the Kodansha storyboarding room when the scene came to me after hours of thinking at my desk,” said the mangaka. “I was so excited when I thought of that scene. I have a deep attachment to the way I made that great scene.”
At the age of 19, Isayama wrote a one-shot that three years later became the basis for Attack on Titan. The ending of Attack on Titan is still controversial in the fan community. Isayama had thought of the ending from the beginning of the story and initially believed that the story would end in two volumes. As the manga’s popularity grew, the mangaka began to question the direction in which he planned to end the series. “The groundwork was solidified while writing up to that point,” said Isayama, “so the story ended the way I vaguely envisioned it for the first time.”
Attack on Titan ran from September 2009 to April 2021 in Kodansha’s monthly Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. The series has become one of the best-selling manga series of all time with 110 million copies in circulation and has inspired a four-season, final three-part animated series. The series has received countless love from readers worldwide, including rapper/singer Megan Thee Stallion. Set in a world where humanity finds themselves trapped behind walls to protect them from man-eating giant humanoid giants called Titans, the story follows Eren Yeager, who vows to fight defeat Titan and liberate humanity after watching his mother die at the hands of one.
Attack on Titan is currently available to read digitally on the K-Manga app.
