In Pokémon XY, Ash meets Clemont, who was kicked out of his own gym by a robot he built to help run the place while he was away. Ash was kicked out of the gym because he needed 4 badges to challenge it and didn’t have any when he first arrived. Clemont and his sister, Bonnie, decide to travel with Ash and leave the gym under robot control for a while.
Ash eventually helps Clemont retake the gym and return the robot to normal operation, but refuses to fight Clemont until he meets that 4-badge requirement. Clemont respects this decision and the two continue to travel together until Ash has enough badges.
Clemont takes Ash’s challenge seriously to have a meaningful match
When Ash finally had enough badges, Clemont realizes that he needs to give Ash the challenge of a lifetime, and temporarily bid farewell to Ash and his sister, returning to the gym.
